9 Day North Sumatra Tour
Join us for an incredible 9 day overland tour of North Sumatra's highlights. Spot orangutans in the dense jungle, take part in Batak dances on Samosir island and watch the misty sunrise over the biggest volcanic lake in the world. Day 1- Arrival
We will meet you with a private car at Medan airport to bring you to Bukit Lawang. You will stay in Eco Lodge, where you can relax in their garden or enjoy a cool beverage overlooking the Bohorok river. The first evening you will meet your jungle guide for a briefing on the trek the following day.
Day 2/3- Gunung Leuser National Park Overnight Trek
You can enjoy breakfast included before setting off on your two day jungle trek to see orangutans and other unique wildlife. Your guide will meet you at 8.30am and you will start at 9am. All guides are certified and experienced. During your trek the guide will explain about the local flora and fauna. You will be provided with fresh fruit and lunch in the jungle. After a satisfying day trekking you will arrive at our camp based close to a river. Later you will be treated to local meal prepared by our camp chef. The next day you will get the chance to visit a beautiful waterfall, followed by lunch and then an exhilarating raft ride back to your starting point.
By 3pm you will be back at Eco Lodge Hotel where you are free to enjoy your afternoon.
Day 4- Village Life Tour
After breakfast included at your hotel, your guide will meet you at 8.30am and by 9 am you will have set off on the Village Tour.
We will travel by local becak (tuk tuk) through the rice fields and villages to meet local people and watch or take part in traditional practices.
During the tour you will see how brown sugar is made, stopping at a local families home to watch the process. Once cooked you can taste the brown sugar juice and try a bite of 'Gula merah', a dense sugar cake. We provide a funding for their service.
Next we will stop at the tofu producer where you can watch how soybeans are processed. If you wish to purchase and taste freshly cooked tofu you may.
Our tour will pass through local farm land, palm oil plantations, rubber plantations, cacao farm land and rice fields. Along the way, your guide will stop and demonstrate how local farmers are able to harvest and process these materials.
After this tour, you will feel closer to Indonesian culture and have experienced local life, language and culture.
Lunch is included in the Village Tour.
By 3.30pm you will be back at Eco Lodge Hotel where you are free to enjoy your afternoon.
Day 5- Travel to Lake Toba
The next day we will set off at 6am to travel by private car to Lake Toba. Breakfast will be provided and taken away to enjoy at a stop on-route.
On the way we will stop off at Sipisopiso water falls, the biggest waterfall in Sumatra. Here you can enjoy the view and relax before we start our journey again. Next we still stop at the tribal kings’ house of the Simalungun Batak in Pematang Purba .
By afternoon, we will have arrived at Lake Toba. Now we will take a scenic ferry crossing over to Samosir island.
On Samosir we will stay at Zoe's Paradise for 3 nights, a stunning waterfront hotel. Here you can relax or enjoy a swim in their pool.
Day 6- Free day to enjoy the views of Samosir
Today is a free day, so if you wish you can enjoy a lazy morning with breakfast included. The car, driver and guide will be available today should you wish to visit anywhere.
Day 7- tour around the island, stopping at Tomok, Ambarita, and Simanindo
Wake up and enjoy breakfast included. We will set off at 9am to tour the island. First, we will travel to the high point of the island to see stunning views. Next enjoy the local culture and see traditional Batak dances in Simanindo., where there is also a small museum located.
After that we head over to Ambarita to learn about the history of the stone chairs and execution table, followed by a visit to King Sidabutar's grave.
Finally, if you wish to continue exploring the island we will head over to watch the traditional weaving where you can purchase beautiful materials if you wish.
Day 8- Leaving samosir and arriving in Parapat
After breakfast included we will set off to leave the island at 11am. Wave goodbye to Samosir island as we take a ferry crossing and head to .Sapadia Hotel, located in Parapat. Here you can relax and enjoy the swimming pool and views over the lake.
